We kicked off the fall Darwin150 Campaign - the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" with scientist, editor and author Richard Milner.
Milner delighted us tonight with the stories, songs and science of his new book, "Darwin's Universe." An Associate in Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History, Richard Milner is an unusual combination of scientist, writer, historian and Broadway actor.
A number of years ago, during my undergraduate education in biology, I had the great honor and pleasure of spending an evening with Dr. Gould. I had read all of his popularly published work up to that time and had sheepishly brought all of my dog-eared copies with me to Dr. Gould’s lecture and reception. With equal reverence and dread I approached Dr. Gould who graciously signed every book. I still treasure every one of those books and always show them off to unsuspecting visitors to my home. After reading your memoir, “Farewell Fossilface”, the lineage of generosity of spirit from Dr. Colbert is clear. That lineage has even given me personal cause to reflect on some of my own behaviors.
Before I entered the “profession” of education I volunteered with youth. Since that time through to this day, without exception I have found that I have engaged with young people of all ages the way that Gould and Colbert did, and for your illumination of that knowledge I will be eternally grateful. To think that I share with these men of great minds not only interests but a certain sensibility is both rewarding and humbling.
Finally, thank you for the gift of knowledge and entertainment. In the future, in my work with teachers and students I will be frequently quoting you and crediting you with a generosity of spirit that the lovers of evolutionary thought illuminate the world.

First, I simply LOVE Richard Milner's book which arrived yesterday. I immediately sat down with my kids and we read selections out loud. Fabulous. We are taking it to vacation. It is also one of those books that i would NEVER want to read on a E Reader. Also, I am going to give it to my Dad for his 78th birthday. He will love it.
